Musings From the Laundromat

A 10-year column in Seattle

Irene’s decade long column, Musings from the Laundromat,  appeared regularly in the Queen Anne/Magnolia News in Seattle.

In Hands Off the Wheel, Irene reflects on the fact that life often has different plans for us than the ones we have set in motion.

My life, which I had fought so hard to drive in the direction I thought it was meant to go in, got sick of waiting for me and headed off on its own path without looking back. I continued to look for detours and side roads, screaming, “Wait up! You’re going the wrong way!” But to no avail. This thing had a life of its own.

Season of Mists considers the idea that Autumn, in all its golden splendor, is a time of true beginnings.

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” — F. Scott Fitzgerald

I have always thought that fall seems more like the beginning of the year than January. When the mornings turn cooler and the fog lingers a bit later in the day, I get excited. Like something is about to happen.

Holiday Reflection: Don’t forget to Breathe offers a way to relax our expectations and stress during the holidays.

The gratitude I feel for the time we are in — right here, right now — outweighs any expectations to provide the “perfect” holiday experience. Because really, what is this holiday about if not about being grateful? Whether you eat a traditional meal or just gather with your family for a potluck and a game of cards, it’s enough to be together in whatever state you are. To love one another and include a few people who may lack that particular element in their lives. And to embrace them with the love that spills over from your abundance.
